How to measure a hoodie you already love

Essential Logo Hoodie, front view
The most useful fit reference is often already in your wardrobe. Instead of relying only on a size letter, measure a hoodie that fits the way you want your next one to fit.

Set up a clear comparison.

Lay the hoodie on a flat surface with the front facing up. Smooth out folds gently without pulling the fabric. Keep a note of the unit you use, such as centimetres, and use that same unit for every measurement.

Measure the flat chest width.

Find the points where the sleeves meet the body at the underarms. Measure straight across from one side to the other. Record this as a flat garment width. It is different from measuring around your body, so explain which measurement you are comparing when you ask about a product.

Measure the body length.

Start at the high shoulder point beside the hood and measure down to the bottom hem. Notice where this hoodie sits on you. A familiar chest width can still feel different if the body is shorter or longer.

Check the sleeves and shoulder shape.

Measure along the outside of the sleeve from the shoulder seam to the cuff. Also notice whether the shoulder seam sits on your shoulder or drops lower down the arm. A dropped shoulder changes how a sleeve measurement relates to the overall fit.

Ask a specific fit question.

Send the design name, the size you are considering and the measurements you want to compare. Tell us whether you prefer a closer or roomier fit and whether you plan to layer underneath. We can help you check the relevant garment information before you order.
Measurement methods and garment shapes can vary. Use the numbers as a practical comparison, then consider how you want the hoodie to feel and sit when worn.
